Shalteng residents cry foul over flood relief

SRINAGAR: Flood-affected residents of Shalteng area in Srinagar outskirts allege that the officials are demanding bribes in lieu of releasing their relief amounts.
“Every flood victim has to pay Rs 500 to get approval for the relief fund”, said Ishtiyaq Ahmad, who approached the relief office. He said a clerk manning the relief desk shows no qualms in demanding and accepting bribes.
After huge losses suffered in September 2014 floods in Jammu and Kashmir, several officials shamelessly demand bribe from the flood victims” said Zubaida, another flood victim.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Srinagar Qazi Sarwar said that he has received no complaint over the relief distribution in Shalteng area. “Flood relief is being disbursed smoothly, if there is any corrupt practice going on, I would investigate it”, Sarwar said.
