Pampore: Residents of Saffron town Pampore Tuesday took to streets against implementation of Food Security Act (FSA) demanding its rollback. Protestors blocked Srinagar- Jammu National Highway hampering vehicular movement through the area.
Reports said that hundreds of Pampore residents took to the streets and shouted slogans against the government. The protestors blocked the movement of vehicular traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway for more one-hour causing huge traffic jam. Hundreds of vehicles including ambulances and security vehicles were stranded on highway for hours.
“We want ration according to the earlier system. We don’t NFSA that is snatching our right to eat,” said Bashir Ahmad, a protestor adding that most of the people not covered under NFSA have not been provided ration this time.
The protestors warned of a prolonged agitation in near future if the Act was not rolled back.
Traffic on the highway was restored on the intervention of Police who assured the protestors that their grievances would be forwarded to the concerned authorities.
Scores of residents Shar Shali village in Pampore too staged a protest and demanded immediate revocation of NFSA. The protesters blocked the main road that suspended vehicular movement on Khrew-Pampore road.
Meanwhile, District Development Commissioner Pulwama Niraj Kumar, chaired a meeting in Pulwama regarding the implementation of NFSA in the district. The DDC while directing the concerned officers to complete all the formalities in the fixed timeframe said that implementation of the NFSA will not only make available ration as per the 2011 census but will also put an end to all the complaints regarding ration distribution in the district.
DDC stressed upon the officers of Revenue and CAPD Departments to work in a collaborative manner so that proper identification of the families as per the already formulated guidelines under this Act is achieved before the deadline. Under NFSA, people will get assured supply of ration right at their doorsteps in a hassle-free manner. Any person who is denied ration shall be given ‘Food Security Allowance’ through an inbuilt mechanism which has been incorporated in the Act at state, district and block-level. DDC directed the CAPD department to make aware people about the NFSA through awareness camps in every tehsil of the district.
