Man dies in attack during anti-encroachment drive in Samba

Jammu: A 28-year-old man died of a gunshot wound on Monday during an attack on an anti-encroachment team of Jammu Development Authority (JDA) by some members of the Gujjar community in Samba district of Jammu region.
A team of the JDA along with a police team had gone to remove encroachment from the JDA land in Sarore area of the district when a large number of Gujjars attacked them with sticks and stones, a police officer said.
A man identified by his nickname Jukha received gunshot wound and died on the spot, he said.
“He has died of gunshot wound and police are trying to ascertain from where the bullet came and who fired it,” the officer said.
The body of the victim, a Gujjar, has been shifted to the Sub-District hospital, Ramgarh, for postmortem and other legal and medical formalities.
As the news of the death of the youth spread, members of the community came on roads and the situation in the area continues to be tense.
“The situation is tense in the area and a large number of police personnel have been deployed to foil any untoward incident”, the officer said.
The district administration has ordered a magisterial enquiry into the incident.
“Yes, I have also come to know that a man has died due to a gunshot wound. We have ordered a magisterial enquiry into the whole episode,” Deputy Commissioner (DC) Samba, Sheetal Nanda said.
