Jammu: Awami Itihaad Party president and legislator Engineer Rashid had a narrow escape after he was attacked by a group of people—he said they were Sangh parivar activists—in Rajouri district on Saturday.
Rashid was attacked when he was on his way to Kalakote from Jammu. When his vehicle reached Bhamla, some people raising pro-India slogans attacked his vehicle.
The assailants were reportedly angry over Rashid’s taking out a procession in the Valley in support of pro-Afzal demonstrators in JNU.
The assailants broke the window panes and wind screen of the vehicle and also threw ink on him. Rashid claimed the assailants were carrying RSS and Bajrang Dal flags.
“I was on my way to Rajouri when a group of 20-25 people who were carrying RSS and Bajrang Dal flags stopped my vehicle near Bamla under the jurisdiction of Reasi district,” Rasid told PTI.
He said the protesters first raised slogans against him and then attacked his vehicle with rods, sticks and stones.
“Even I was hit by a stone, the police escort which accompanied me from Jammu saved my life otherwise they would have killed me as they tried to drag me out of my vehicle,” he said.
Accusing the Station House Officer of Sunderbani of helping the attackers, Rashid said, “Strict action should be taken against him.”
He also said that his attackers raised slogans against him.
Rashid said that the security personnel accompanying him somehow managed to help him flee from the spot but when he was on his way to Jammu his vehicle was once again attacked by another group of people.
“It is my personal vehicle as I don’t travel in government given vehicle. They have damaged my car completely,” he said.
When asked whether he would lodge a police complaint against the attackers, Rashid said that the police must take congnisance and take action against the accused on its own.
“If anything of this sort happens in Kashmir, police is swift to slap PSA against Kashmiris then why the treatment is different with the goons in Jammu,” he said.
When contacted, a senior police official said that they are investigating the matter and anything in this regard can be said only after verifying all the facts.
This has been the second attack on Rashid during the last nearly six months as he was earlier attacked near Bhaderwah in Doda in the wake of beef ban controversy. There also, ink was thrown on him, and his vehicle damaged, but he was rescued by police.
