People protest contaminated water supply at Anantnag

Anantnag: People from several villages in Anantnag on Thursday held protests against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department for failing to provide them the clean drinking water.
Hundreds of people from Harnag, Khundipora, Bahram Shah and Reshipora assembled on Srinagar-Jammu national highway near Harnag and held protests. The protesters blocked the busy highway for nearly two hours leading to long and messy traffic jam on highway.
Demanding clean drinking water the protesters said that many people in their villages have fallen ill due to the consumption of drinking water. “They (PHE) have been supplying us highly contaminated water leading to water borne diseases among the people,” the protesters said.
They said the new water scheme was sanctioned for the area a couple of years ago but that remains far from completion due to the slow pace of work on the same.
Though the top officials rushed to the spot to pacify the protesters but they refused to relent. Later, the officials from district administration arrived at the spot and assured the protesters of addressing their grievances within a couple of days after which the protesters ended their protest.
