Tral: Two people died in a landslide-cum-avalanche that hit Narastan village of Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday.
The deceased, according to reports, were fetching fodder for animals when the tragedy took place.
Dy Superintendent of Police Tral, Shahzad Ahmad Matto said both persons, who were buried under avalanche, have been excavated. They were identified as Mohammad Yousuf (22) son of Ghulla Gojar and Mohammad Yousuf (32) son of Jumma Ahmad.
Locals said they had gone to fetch fodder kept in Rakhs (meadow patches in the forest) in the morning and didn’t return on time prompting people to start searches.
“When they did not return, some locals went out to search them. In the process, we found a huge mass of snow had piled about two kilometers away from the habitation. After searching for hours, we started to excavate the snow,” Danish Ahmad, a resident of Narastan, said.
“When we could not locate the bodies, we called police for help,” he said.
A police official while confirming the incident said after receiving information, a police party was sent to help locals in excavating the bodies of the missing persons.
“The bodies were later on traced out,” he said, adding, “After the legal formalities, the bodies were handed over to their relatives.”
