Srinagar: Pro-Azfal Guru, pro-Azadi and pro-Geelani slogans rented the air in Jadavpur University of West Bengal on Tuesday afternoon, after students organised a rally in solidarity with JNU students.
The students shouted slogans “Afzal bole azaadi, Geelani bole azaadi…Jab Kashmir ne mangi Azadi, Manipur bhi bole Azadi,” during the march in the campus.
The protest march comes on the heels of the crackdown on JNU following an event held to commemorate Afzal Guru’s death anniversary last week. Delhi police arrested JNU student leader
Kanhaiya Kumar and booked him for sedition.
Last evening, Delhi police also arrested former Delhi University lecturer SAR Geelani on sedition charges.
The JNU event row has snowballed into a major issue in India with opposition Congress and Left parties rallying behind the students.
Earlier, Indian Home minister Rajnath Singh had linked Lashkar-e-Toiba founder Hafiz Mohammad Sayeed with the JNU event, drawing sharp criticism from the Opposition, while Delhi police claimed it has no evidence to link the two.
A day ago, a group of lawyers and a BJP Delhi legislator beat up students and journalists at Patiala House Court where Kanhaiya was brought for hearing.
