Uri residents protest water shortage, lock PHE office

Uri: Residents of Uri on Monday held a protest demonstration against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department for failing to provide them with clean drinking water.
Raising anti-PHE slogans, the protesters locked employees of the department in the office for an hour.
The protesting residents said they are not getting clean drinking water while the bills are sent regularly to their homes.
“Every month the department sends bills to our homes and we pay it on time but still we are not getting safe drinking water,” they said.
They said a number of water filter plants and pipelines have not been repaired even if the department has spent lakhs of rupees on its reconstruction.
“We are facing a lot of inconvenience in getting the safe drinking water. People are prompted to drink the contaminated water of local nallahs,” said one of the protesters Ali Mohd Khan of Dachi village.
Locals have threatened the department of not paying the water bills in near future.
When contacted, Assistant Executive Engineer PHE Uri, Mushtaq Ahmad said the government has made it mandatory to have an agreement with every household for using the water and have selected water charges for its use. “Actually people don’t want to pay the water bills that is why they created ruckus outside my office today,” he said.
