Srinagar: The day late Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died, a two-member delegation of Peoples Democratic Party had conveyed the Governor N N Vohra that the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti would be the next CM of Jammu and Kashmir.
A letter from Raj Bhawan to Home Ministry accessed by Kashmir Reader revealed that PDP Member of Parliament Muzaffar Hussain Baig and the party general secretary Nizamudin Bhat had met Vohra at Srinagar airport on January 7 evening with “prior appointment” conveying party’s support to Mehbooba.
“Before I left Srinagar to return to Jammu on January 7, a PDP delegation comprising MP Muzaffar Hussain Baig and PDP general secretary Nizamudin Bhat met me with prior appointment at Srinagar airport. Baig informed me that he had brought a letter from his party addressed to me, which intimated PDP’s decision that Mehbooba Mufti would be next chief minister,” read the Raj Bhawan communique dispatched on January 9.
However, Vohra said, Baig did not handover the letter of support to him because Baig said he would have to be “fully assured” that the entire PDP legislators were on board about the decision.
“Baig explained to me that he was not handing over letter to me as he needed to recheck and be fully assured that all the PDP MLA’s were on board with regard to the decision,” he added.
The Governor had informed the PDP delegation that the CM has to be administered oath by January 8 and it would require a resolution of Party’s legislators and a letter of support from its alliance partner BJP to have Mehbooba as the CM.
Baig had told Vohra that the letter of PDP’s Legislature party decision along with letter of support from the BJP about government formation would be dispatched to him on January 8. However, on receiving no response from both the former coalition partners, Vohra dispatched letters to the two to clear their stand on government formation.
“But till 1300 hours, I have received no communication from the PDP regarding the election of its new leader…. And I would appreciate an urgent reply (by Fax) to determine the next steps,” read a letter sent by Vohra to Mehbooba on January 8.
Earlier on January 7, Vohra had duly conveyed to the BJP former deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and the former PDP minister Naeem Akhtar about the constitutional requirements and timeframe for swearing-in of the new CM.
