SPO flees with service rifle

SRINAGAR: A Special Police Officer (SPO) on Saturday fled with a service rifle of a constable from a police station here.
The SPO Riyaz Ahmad, posted at the Rainawari police station, decamped with the rifle of constable Showkat Ahmed who is posted at the same police station.
“Riyaz was missing since today (Saturday) morning. It was only after lunch we found that he (Riyaz) had decamped with Showkat’s service rifle (AK-47),” a senior police officer told Kashmir Reader.
Riyaz hails from Khan Sahib area of Budgam district.
“An FIR has been registered and a departmental inquiry has been launched,” the police officer said.
This is the second incident in the past two months. On January 16, a cop decamped with four rifles from the residence of a senior police officer in south Kashmir.
Shakoor Ahmad, who was posted as Personal Security Officer (PSO) to SDPO Bijbehara Irshad Ahmad Bhat, had decamped with the rifles.
Sources believe that Ahmad might have joined militants like his predecessor Naseer Pandith, who fled taking along his service rifle while he was posted on guard at then works minister Altaf Bukhari’s residence in Sheikhbagh area of Srinagar in March 2015.
