ANANTNAG: A militant was killed by government forces in Veerbagh-Gundora village of Pulwama district on Saturday.
Gunfire was heard at about 4pm after scores of soldiers, policemen and paramilitary troopers laid siege around the village.
While Kashmir Reader could not independently verify what actually happened, a police official said on condition of anonymity that the deceased militant tried to escape after throwing a grenade at the forces. However, the forces shot him dead.
The deceased militant has been identified as Syed Mufeed Bashir Andrabi alias Raqib son of Syed Bashir Andrabi of Zadoora Pulwama.
People in his native village said that Raqib had joined militant ranks five months ago, a day after he had been engaged as a special police officer (SPO).
Before serving police for a day, he had been working in a bank but had been sacked for unauthorised absence from duty.
Pulwama senior superintendent of police Tejinder Singh said a pistol and a grenade were recovered from the deceased.
Protests broke out in the area after his killing. Hundreds of people rushed to the police station where his body was taken after his killing. His body was taken to his native village in a massive procession, amid pro-freedom slogans.
