Police foils teachers’ protest against screening test order

SRINAGAR: Police on Monday foiled teachers’ planned protest against the government’s decision to have them undergo a screening test.
Under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir Rehbar-e-Taleem Forum, hundreds of teachers gathered near the Kashmir Haat here. But as they started marching towards the Civil Secretariat to cordon the building (secretariat gherao) in protest, police detained dozens of them and foiled the attempt.
The detainees, who were lodged in Sadar police station here, included the president of the forum, Abdul Quyoom Wani.
Talking to Kashmir Reader before his detention, Wani said the government order “will not be accepted under any circumstances”, because the teachers have been appointed on merit.
“The government is habitual of disgracing the teachers. We have degrees from the UGC-recognised universities. We will fight until justice is not served,” he said. The government has ordered all ReTs to undergo a screening for proving their teaching abilities.
