Major earthquake jolts Kashmir

Srinagar: A major intensity earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale jolted Jammu and Kashmir this afternoon causing damages to several houses besides disrupting power supply and telecomunication service.

The tremor with with epicenter in the Hindukush region in northeastern Afghanistan sent people running out of their houses in Srinagar and other majors towns of the Valley, witnesses said. Many people also fell unconsciuos during the tremor that  continued for as long as 4-5 minutes.

Though no reports of loss to lives has been reported, but many houses and vehicles were damaged. Many trees also uprooted due to the intense shocks.

On October 8, 2005, a high intensity earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale hit the Valley and Pakistan Administered Kashmir leading to death over a hundred people and causing widespread damage to property.
