Srinagar: Welcoming the meeting between Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif and the US president Barack Obama in Washington, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday termed it “a significant development”.
“This is a significant development considering the prevailing atmosphere of confrontation and tension in the overall region, particularly in Jammu Kashmir,” Mirwaiz said in a statement.
He said Nawaz Sharif took a “positive step” by asking the US President to play a mediatory role in the resolution of the vexed Kashmir issue.
“We hope that for bringing peace and stability in the region and for ending an atmosphere of uncertainty, the United States would play a positive role in resolving Kashmir issue peacefully in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiri people by accelerating the process of dialogue between the two countries,” Mirwaiz said.
The Hurriyat (M) chairman expressed hope that New Delhi would give up its “rigid and intransigent” stance over Kashmir and exhibit flexibility in resolving the Kashmir issue while keeping the international situation, regional peace and stability in mind.
“New Delhi must show seriousness in resolving the long-standing Kashmir issue by initiating a process of dialogue both with Islamabad as well as the Kashmiri leadership,” Mirwaiz added.
