Teargas canisters burst, warning shots fired to break up Muharram procession at Habba Kadal

Srinagar:  Police used batons, lobbed teargas canisters and fired a few shots in air this morning at Habba Kadal to break up a Muharram procession.

Groups of youth believed to be Shia mourners this morning tried to take out a procession from Habba Kadal locality of this capital city, witnesses told Kashmir Reader. The mourners, however, were intercepted by CRPF troopers and police.

“When the mourners offered resistance, the government forces resorted to baton charge to disperse them. This infuriated the mourners who pelted stones in retaliation,” witnesses said.

The clashes soon spread in narrow lanes and by lanes of the congested locality, as the angry mourners and government forces exchanged brickbats.

The forces, witnesses said fired a few warning shots after failing to disperse the stone pelting mourners with tear smoke shells.
