Kashmiri photojournalists to hold photography workshop

Srinagar: Award-winning Kashmiri photojournalists Altaf Qadri and Showkat Nanda are holding a workshop on documentary photography and visual storytelling here.
The workshop, to be held in Srinagar in the first week of November, is being organised by News Photojournal, which is an online platform comprising 12 award-wining international photographers and photo-editors from seven different countries, the organisers said in a press release issue here.
“The workshop is aimed at sharpening skills of amateur photographers and mid-career photojournalists and exposing them to the contemporary trends in the field,” they said.
They said American photographer and filmmaker John Farmer de la torre and Ukranian photojournalist Alexey Furman will also be part of the workshop and will deliver lectures online.
“This is not just another photography workshop. It’s basically aimed at teaching young people how to go beyond clichés, tell meaningful stories and reach a larger audience,” instructor Showkat Nanda, a Missouri Photo Workshop alumnus and Fulbright Scholar, said.
Altaf Qadri, a celebrated AP photojournalist, said,” This is the time when we must provide proper training and advice to our young photographers so that they are able to tell stories through pictures.”
News Photojournal’s head of operations and workshop coordinator Syed Naveed Hamdani asserted that this is going to be the first-of-its-kind workshop in Kashmir.
“The three-day workshop will have group instruction, in-the-field mentoring and a photo exhibition. The participants who produce exceptional work during the workshop will be awarded in different categories and also win a three-month internship with News Photojournal,” he said.
The photography event will be held in partnership with AKS Images, Mehboob Color Lab and Kathi Junction, Sara City Center, the organisers said.
Registration will be done strictly on the basis of a portfolio of six photographs to be sent to newsphotojournal@gmail.com, they said.
