Anantnag: Despite heavy rains and government imposed curbs, thousands of people today participated in the funeral (Nimaz-e-Jinaza) of a Kashmiri trucker who died of the serious burns caused in an attack by Hindu fanatics in Udhampur district of Jammu early this month.
Thousands of people converged at the house of Zahid Ahmad Bhat at Batengoo village here to participate in his funeral prayers, witnesses told Kashmir Reader. Chanting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans, the mourners carried Zahid’s body on a procession to his ancestral graveyard.
Amid tears and sobs, Zahid was laid to rest. Hurriyat Conferene (G) General Secretary, Ghulam Nabi Sumbji and Jamaat-e-Islami spokesman Zahid Ali addressed the mourners.
A resident of Botengoo, Zahid had suffered 60% burns, while his colleague Showkat Ahmad Dar of Uranhal suffered 30% burn injuries after a Hindu mob burnt them with petrol bombs in Udhampur on October 9. He succumbed to his injuries at New Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Sunday morning.
