- Haneefa was allegedly burnt last week in Kulgam; admitted with 80% burns, passed away at SHMS
Pulwama: A mother of two, who was allegedly burnt by her in-laws in a village in Kulgam district last week, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital in Srinagar on Saturday morning. Forty-three-year-old Haneefa Begum, wife of Mohammad Shafi Dar of Damidulla, Yaripora, died at the SMHS hospital a week after she was admitted with at least 80% burns, a senior police official said.
Haneefa was reportedly facing harassment at the hands of her two sisters-in-law. The duo, identified as Mehfooza and Fancy Jan, has been arrested. SHO Yaripora, Mohammad Ashraf, told Kashmir Reader that both of them have been sent to Srinagar’s Central Jail on judicial remand.
He said that a case, FIR No 86/2015 under sections 307 and 498-A RPC, has been registered: “The body of the deceased will be handed over to her legal heirs for last rites after the completion of formalities.”
This death follows two other cases of women allegedly set ablaze (in Khanyar area of Srinagar and Vehil village in south Kashmir’s Shopian district) by their in-laws.
Sections of civil society have expressed concern over the rising incidents of domestic violence against women and have stressed
that the authorities should act against those involved in such crimes.
