SRINAGAR: Dozens of students from Girls Higher Secondary School in Lolab area of Kupwara district, as well as locals, on Wednesday protested against the school administration for hushing up a case against a teacher alleged to have “sexually abused” many students in the past.
However, the police said that only one student has registered a complaint, and investigations are going on.
Eyewitness told Kashmir Reader that the protesters came out on the streets, blocked the road, while chanting slogans against the principal and demanding that the accused be arrested. Traffic remained suspended throughout the day. “We protest against the accused teacher and the principal of the school. We demand strict punishment against the teacher. We cannot tolerate such things in an education institution,” a student who was part of protest told Kashmir Reader over the phone.
The students had reportedly already complained about these incidents to the principal, but he did not initiate any action.
Sub district police officer Hilal Bhat told Kashmir Reader that an FIR no 57 under section 354 RPC (assault on women with intent to outrage modesty) has been registered against the accused and an investigation has been started.
“The students were protesting throughout out the day. Initially, we were trying to control the law and control situation. In the evening we received a complaint from a student and subsequently lodged an FIR. The principal of the school told me that he received a complaint on Monday and had initiated an investigation, but the students came out on the streets today,” Hilal said.
