Srinagar: Two brothers from Qazigund, who were attacked with petrol bombs by a Hindu mob in Udhampur on the same day two Kashmiri Muslim truckers were set afire in the same district, said the police not only did nothing to act against the assailants, but appeared to be complicit.
Sayar Ahmad Naikoo and his brother Khursheed Ahmad Bhat, residents of Mir Bazar in Qazigund, said that a group of about 20 people signaled them to stop in Udhampur when they were returning home from Punjab on Friday.
“We didn’t stop because we sensed they were up to some mischief. One of them threw a petrol bomb which fell on the ground after hitting the window. They chased us and broke the windshield with stones and then threw another petrol bomb which directly hit my brother (Sayar Ahmad) who was sitting on my left side,” said Khursheed, who was driving the truck.
“His shirt caught fire and I tried to douse it with one hand while driving the vehicle with another. I stopped near a police chowki and asked the policemen that a mob attacked us. They told me that they cannot help,” he added.
Khursheed said that after travelling some distance, he spotted a traffic police officer.
“I begged before him to help us. He told me ‘leave the area immediately.”
“My heart began to sink because I thought there is no one to help and the goons are everywhere. For a distance of about 2km, we were intermittently attacked with stones.”
“I applied tooth paste on Sayar’s burns and drove through the night,” Khursheed said.
The brothers reached home on Saturday. Hundreds of Qazigund residents had demonstrated against the attack on Srinagar-Jammu highway.
