‘Encounter rages in north Kashmir’s Handwara’

Baramulla: Unknown militants and the joint team of Special Operation Group (SOG) of police and army were locked in a gunfight in a forest area in  Kupwara district on late Saturday evening.
RR soldiers and the SOG  laid a cordon around Waderbala area of Handwara after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants in the forests, DIG (north Kashmir) Gareeb Daas told Kashmir Reader.
“When the joint team started further advances into the woods, the heavily armed militants opened indiscriminate fire towards them in a bid to break the cordon. The joint team has returned the fire,” he said.
Two-three militants, Daas said, are believed to be holed up in the area.
