Encounter rages in north Kashmir’s Handwara: Police

Baramulla: Unknown militants and the joint team of Special Operation Group (SOG) of police and army are locked in a gunfire in a forest area in the neighbouring Kupwara district.

RR soldiers and the SOG of police laid a cordon around Waderbala area of Handwara after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants in the forests, DIG, north Kashmir Gareeb Daas told Kashmir Reader.

When the joint team started further advances into the woods, the heavily armed militants opened indiscriminate fire towards them in a bid to break the cordon.

“The joint team has returned the fire. Exchange of gunfire is going on,” he said.

2-3 militants, Daas said are believed to be holed up in the area.
