Bid to smuggle liquor foiled, vehicle with ‘On BSF duty’ label seized

SRINAGAR: Sleuths of commercial tax department on Friday foiled an attempt to smuggle liquor into the state by seizing a vehicle, having a sticker “on BSF duty”, at Toll Post Lakhanpur.
The vehicle (HR61C-3593) was carrying 2400 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor(IMFL) with two men from Haryana on board, officials of excise department told Kashmir Reader.
“During the intensified checking at the entry point of the state, 2400 bottles of IMFL in 200 cases (all meant for sale in Haryana State only) were detected. The vehicle was bearing a sticker of “On BSF Duty” on its front. The liquor was not bearing any manufacturing date / batch no. etc,” the official said.
The driver of the vehicle Ajay Kumar of Dadri Bhiwani in Haryana told the toll post officials that the there were house hold goods inside the load carrier. “It was during the physical checking that the attempt to smuggle liquor was foiled,” the official added. Besides the driver, another person Sanjay Singh of Haryana was present in the vehicle.
The offence attracts punitive action under the J&K Excise Act, Smvt 1958. The accused alongwith the vehicle and seized liquor have been handed over to the Excise & Taxation Officer, Kathua Range, for further action under the Excise Act.
