Srinagar: Independent legislator Sheikh Abdur Rashid and dozens of his supporters have been detained by police here to foil their secretariat gherao programme against the alleged sabotaging of the anti-beef ban bill in the state assembly.
Early morning, the Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) president and MLA Langate, Rashid and dozens of his supporters converged near the Central Market, Amira Kadal and tried to march towards the Civil Secretariat, witnesses told Kashmir Reader. However, the police, that was deployed in advance intercepted the marchers.
“When the AIP activists offered resistance and tried to break the cordon, police swung into action and detained many of them, including Rashid,” witnesses said.
Rashid, who was thrashed by BJP MLAs on Thursday in the legislative assembly for throwing a beef party, had planned secretariat gherao after the beef bill was not taken up for discussion.
