Srinagar: Another eminent Indian writer has returned a state award in protest against ‘comunalism’ under Narendra Modi. After Nayantara Sahgal returned her Sahitya Akademi award in protest against the “unmaking of India”, poet Ashok Vajpeyi has now returned the literary honour, criticising Narendra Modi for not ‘speaking up against the recent spree of violence’.
“It’s high time that writers take a stand” on the recent murders of writers and minorities, said Vajpeyi. “Writers are being murdered, innocent people are being murdered, his (PM’s) ministers make controversial statements…Still he is quiet. Why doesn’t he shut them up?” Vajpeyi told a media outlet.
Vajpeyi said he decided to give up the award to express his solidarity with Sahgal.
