Er Rashid ‘tackles’ the House, alone

SRINAGAR: Independent MLA Abdul Rashid, who was the only member who opposed the Jammu and Kashmir government during the ongoing assembly session till the end of the day, cornered every member who spoke in the House.
While the NC, Congress and two other independent MLAs left the house at 11 am, Rashid continued to sit in the well of the House till the last minute. Though proceedings continued according to listed business, Rashid continued his disruptions. In fact, he was in the well of the House when his motion on education was discussed. And despite repeated requests by members to sit in his seat, Rashid continued to occupy the well.
During Education Minister Naeem Akhtar’s speech, Rashid interrupted by saying, “Under you, the education department will never flourish. Haji sahib, first tell me what did you slaughter on Eid?” Naeem responded by saying that this was derogatory, and that he ‘wanted to slaughter him (Rashid)’!
When Health Minister Lal Singh, during his speech, said that the “Police is basically responsible for spreading drugs in Kashmir (sic),” Rashid responded that he (Singh) was right, but if he (Rashid) had made such a comment the Speaker would have thrown him out. Singh, in reply, asked Rashid to ‘shut up’.
Rashid also asked Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu to get up and answer as to what had happened to the ‘financial package’. Drabu did not respond, but as he was leaving the House, Rashid shouted: “I will be here till the end and will follow you like the September floods if you do not release the funds. You will try to leave but I will chase you till the last moment.”
When MoS Health Asiya Naqash talked about the plight of women vis a vis domestic violence, Rashid again interrupted by asking why she wasn’t talking about the “Women of Kunan-Poshpora who were raped by the army. Why don’t you talk about Asiya and Neelofer who were raped and then murdered?”
When Rashid was given a chance to ask questions, he raised many issues: “I ask the CM why Asiya Andrabi is being rearrested? Why is the government silent on the beef issue…?” However, Law Minister Basharat Bukhari told Rashid that he should be aware that during zero hour, only one issue can be talked about.
