BJP accuses Omar of demeaning Speaker’s office

JAMMU: The BJP on Tuesday accused the former chief minister Omar Abdullah of “demeaning” the Speaker’s office.
“Omar Abdullah has had his guns trained on the Speaker all this week accusing him as biased. It is both shocking as well as shameful that the NC legislator has been demeaning the office of the Speaker without any sense of discretion”, BJP state spokesperson Arun Kumar Gupta said.
Omar had accused the speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly Kavinder Gupta of being biased who was “throttling” the voice of the opposition in the as¬sembly.
Gupta expressed re¬gret over the proceedings of the ongoing Autumn-session of the Legislative Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir. “The Beerwah Legislator should not dis¬respect the chair of the speaker”, Gupta said.
Adding he said “It is surprising that Omar Abdullah, who belongs to the party that has ruled the state for the longest time, has not practised propriety while either addressing the Speaker in the Assembly or for that matter disrespecting the stature of Speaker’s chair.”
He said that it has not happened before that the speaker’s authority was undermined with a per¬verse accusation of asso¬ciation with a particular organization.
Kavinder Gupta had said that he was a proud member of the RSS, but when he was on chair in¬side the assembly he was just the speaker of the house.
“Omar should be re¬minded that speaker is the head of the Assembly and not a member or rep¬resentative of a party”, Gupta said.
Gupta said that the for¬mer chief minister was frustrated not being in power at either the centre or in the state.
“After being out of pow¬er as the chief minister, Omar Abdullah has been a hard-critic in the at¬tempts to revive his party. Criticism by opposition is definitely acceptable but it has to remain in the realm of protocol and dignity.” he said Adding he said “If Omar’s inten¬tion is to put NC’s jammed wheels into motion, blam¬ing anything connected to the RSS is not going to work,” Gupta said.
