Violence breaks out in Varanasi

Varanasi (UP): Several people, including policemen have been injured here in the violence that saw mobs setting ablaze at least three police jeeps, nearly half-a-dozen motorcycles and some shops.

The violence broke out during a march by seers and some other locals, when some people in the crowd resorted to stone-pelting, police sources said.

The mob also indulged in arson, setting afire a police picket, a police jeep, a motorbike and some shops in Godowlia area under Dashashwamedh police station here, they said.

Varanasi is the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Many policemen and several passersby were injured in the stone-pelting, they said, adding one PAC constable was reported seriously injured.

The miscreants also used crude bombs (cracker bomb).

As the police resorted to lathi charge to control the stone-pelters, the unidentified youth set many police vehicles on fire.

The police then lobbed tear-gas shells to disperse the crowds.

The situation turned worse for the women devotees, who were on their way to Dashashwamedha Ghat for religious rituals. (PTI)
