Srinagar: After failing to gain government’s attention despite a 35-day continuous hunger strike, the National Youth Corp (NYC) president Asif Ali Bhat on Monday threatened self-immolation if the authorities fail to meet their demands in next ten days.
“If our demands are not met within 10 days, I will set myself ablaze outside the residence of education minister Naeem Akhtar,” Asif told Kashmir Reader.
Hundreds of NYC members including females are on an indefinite hunger strike from the last 35 days. The protesting volunteers demand implementation of a 2014 government order passed by NC-Congress regime which was supposed to engage all NYC volunteers as contingent workers in school education department against the vacancies created in newly 800 upgraded schools.
The NYC volunteers were recruited in 2010 under National Service Volunteer Scheme under which they were eligible to serve up to two years but later the state government utilized them for other jobs on the same honorarium of Rs 2500 per month.
Meanwhile, Akhtar denied commenting on the latest threat issued by the NYC president.
