Srinagar: Chairman All Parties Hurriyat Conference (M) and chief of the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday asked people to socially boycott those who are harassing women and forcing them into suicide for dowry.
Addressing the Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, the Mirwaiz dealt on the issue of the ‘Rights of Women in Islam’ and said Kashmiri Muslims should take note of crimes perpetuated against the womenfolk of Kashmir. He said there was no precedence of taking or giving dowry in Islam and so the practice needed to be discouraged.
He added that dowry demands were leading to violence against women as well as becoming a reason for late marriages of women in Kashmir. He was speaking in the context of the incident of the burning of a woman in old Srinagar, apparently due to dowry demands from the in-laws.
He said that in the past three years, 1,200 domestic violence cases had been registered with the police and, according to another report, only 20% of women subjected to domestic violence were reporting the cases to police.
The Mirwaiz appealed to women facing violence to show strength by informing their local Masjid Intezamiya (management) and concerned organisations or rights bodies.
He also appealed to Ulemas, intellectuals and civil society members to collectively fight this evil. The Mirwaiz said there was no Hadith which makes dowry permissible and that Islam had made it clear what responsibilities children have towards their parents and vice versa.
