JAMMU: A training-cum-demonstration programme was organized by Mushroom Development section of Department of Agriculture at Chak–Bhalwal in Block Bhalwal. More than 100 mushroom growers from Akhnoor, R. S. Pura, Marh and Dansal Sub-Divisions participated in the training programme.
R L Bangotra, Mushroom Development Officer, Jammu while interacting with mushroom growers said that the Department of Agriculture is making all out efforts to help the farmers to increase their income by providing requisite technological and material inputs for diversification and adoption of improved Agriculture practices.
He said that the cultivation of mushroom has emerged as important agro-based industry in Jammu Division. Three types of Mushroom are being cultivated in this Division i.e. Milky Mushroom (July-Sept) White Button Mushroom (Sept-March) Dhingri Mushroom (Oct-Dec and Jan – March).
Bangotra revealed that the Department has achieved 12 percent enhancement in establishment of Button Mushroom trays with 15 percent increase in production of Button Mushroom over the last two years.
Similarly the department was in a position to enhance establishment of Dhingri blocks by 32 percent with 15 percent increase in production of Dhingri over the last 3-4-years. He further added that the Department of Agriculture is stressing for Diversification of Agriculture so that the famers can get good returns from activities like mushroom.
During the interaction session, queries were also raised by the farmers regarding mushroom growing which were replied by experts. Practical demonstration for compost making was also started for the participants. The training programme and practical demonstration will continue for ensuing seven days covering various important stages in compost making, spawning and cultivation of white Button Mushroom.
