Burhan’s last words: ‘uncle, give me water’

Baramulla: Chhota mamu mei di treish (uncle, give me water) were Burhan’s last words, says his uncle Mohammad Ashraf, to stress the point that the three-year-old boy, who was hit by a bullet when unknown assailants shot at his father on Friday, kept asking for one thing or the other till his last breath.
Burhan’s father had died on the spot after being shot at by motorcycle-borne gunmen a few metres away from his home in Sagipora area of Sopore area of Baramulla district, a place where a spate of such killings have left people baffled.
“We shifted him to primary health centre Chogal, where doctors referred him to sub-district hospital Sopore (the two places are more than 10km apart). The doctors there referred him to SKIMS in Srinagar (45km away). All the while I was in the ambulance with him. I could see he was weakening with each passing moment,” Ashraf said.
“The driver was driving very fast. Burhan asked ‘where are we going’. I and my younger sister (Razya) were trying to divert his attention with sweet talk and toys,” he said.
“Near Pattan Burhan asked me ‘where is Abu (father), mummy (mother Sakina) and Hourain (11-month-old sister)?’. I told him they are home and we are going to Srinagar. Before being taken to the operation theatre at the SKIMS he asked me ‘chhota mamu mei di treish’ but doctors did not allow us to,” Ashraf said.
After surgery, Burhan was unconscious and succumbed on Saturday morning.
“He was a playful boy. He would never sit still in my lap whenever I visited him. But during that journey from one hospital to another he was passive like a doll asking about things, unaware of what had happened. He was an intelligent kid (at Welkin Education Trust, Sopore),” Ashraf said, amid sobs.
According to chairman of the Welkin Education Trust, Baseema Ajaz, Burhan was a pre-schooler in ‘Pre-Nursery Red’ who “would mostly converse with teachers and other kids in Kashmiri”.
“He was intelligent. Teachers were motivating him to speak Urdu and English. We will miss him,” Baseema said.
The results of the ‘U-3 examination’ Burhan had written were scheduled to be announced on Saturday. Baseema said Burhan has passed.
