Geelani calls for complete shutdown today

Srinagar: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani has called for a state-wide shutdown on Sunday against the killing of a three-year-old child and his father in Sopore. Geelani also termed the killing of a militant in under “mysterious conditions” as a “big tragedy and very unfortunate” for the people of Kashmir.
“No religion in the world allows killing of children even in the battleground. It is the murder of whole humanity and whoever has committed this act has committed a serious crime against humanity, which should be protested by every human being,” Geelani said in a statement.
He said the death of a Syrian child, Aylan Kurdi, shook the whole world and the killing of a Kashmiri child has left entire Kashmir in mourning: “Everybody has a question in his mind: for what crime was this 3-year-old killed?”
Demanding an impartial investigation into these killings, Geelani said the way in which these killings are happening “under the nose of the army and police” makes it seem a “practical implementation of the Indian defence minister’s statement in which he had talked about the use of ‘terrorism against terrorism’”.
Geelani alleged that thousands of people have been killed in the past by government sponsored gunmen and those incidents are yet to be investigated. “We are not calling for shutdown out of any amusement. We try to make minimum use of this option of protest, but the killing of an innocent child has made this issue very serious. So we called for a shutdown despite knowing Eid-ul-Azha is very near. We believe the people will understand the seriousness of the issue and will cooperate in making the shutdown call a success.”
