Katra hoteliers demands relocation of Nagrota abattoir

Srinagar: Katra hotel and restaurant association has expressed resentment over the construction of a slaughterhouse at Khanpur in Nagrota, saying it is located on the way to Vaishnodevi shrine, Katra.
Its statement said, a delegation of the association led by its president Rakesh Wazir and chairman Shyam Lal Kesar asked Commissioner Jammu Muncipal Corporation Mandeep Kaur to relocate the slaughterhouse to some other place.
“The slaughterhouse is visible from a distance of one kilometer and lies on the highway leading to the shrine,” it said.
Quoting Wazir, the statement said, “The entire economy of the state is dependent upon Vaishnodevi pilgrims and the slaughterhouse besides affecting the sentiments of the people will severely affect the yatra as well.”
He said the proposed place should be auctioned for setting up a resort and a portion of revenue generated could be utilized for setting up an abattoir somewhere else.
“The government should ensure the route from Jammu to Katra should be free of wine shops, bars, meat shops, slaughter houses,” it read.
