Police use batons, fire teargas canisters in Sopore

Baramulla: Police used batons and fired teargas canisters to disperse a pro-freedom demonstration in Sopore town of this north Kashmir district.

Early morning, a group of youth assembled at Super Bazar, Sopore and staged a protest demonstration against the killing of three Hizbul Mujahideen militants, witnesses told Kashmir Reader. Besides raising pro-freedom and anti-India slogans, the protesters, mostly youth, threw rocks at CRPF and police deployments.

“Forces burst teargas canisters when they failed to disperse protesters with batons. The youth regrouped and continued pelting stones at the forces. This led to escalation in clashes,” witnesses said.

As the clashes turned fierce, the traders downed their shutters. The movement of transport was also affected due to outbreak of clashes.

Meanwhile, life returned to normal elsewhere after a day’s disruption due to a shutdown called by resistance groups against the killing of Amir Rishi, Ashiq Wani and Naved Khan –members of Hizb who were found dead with gunshot wounds in an orchard in Pattan area on Monday.
