Makkah crane tragedy: All Kashmiri pilgrims safe, say state officials

Srinagar: No Kashmiri Haji has been injured in the crane crash at the grand mosque in Makkah on Friday, which killed at least 107 people and injured 250 others.
Minister for Horticulture and Haj & Auqaf Abdul Rehman Bhat (Veeri) told Kashmir Reader that all Kashmiris were safe till the last reports came in and that he is keeping a watch on the developments after the tragedy.
“Last time when I spoke to officials in Makkah, I was informed all of them are safe,” Veeri said. Two of the dead are Indians.
As per reports more than 80 per cent of the 1.35 lakh pilgrims from India had reached Saudi Arabia and were put up in Makkah or Madina as part of the annual pilgrimage, which begins next week. More than 6000 of them are from Jammu and Kashmir.
The tragedy comes ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage which is due later this month. Millions of Muslims from around the world will converge on the holy city between September 21 and 26.
