Baramulla: Protesters and government forces are locked in pitched battles in the restive town of Palhallan of this north Kashmir district.
Chanting pro-freedom, pro-Islam and anti-India slogans, dozens of men, most of them teenagers from various localities of Palhallan assembled near the higher secondary school and staged a protest over the ban imposed on the sale of beef by the High Court. Angry protesters tried to march towards the Main Chowk Palhallan along the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway.
However, the police and paramilitary CRPF used batons and fired numerous teargas canisters to break up the demonstrators. In retaliation, protesters threw rocks towards the government forces sparking off fierce clashes,” witnesses said.
The outbreak of clashes, witnesses said prompted traders to down their shutters and run towards the safer places. The clashes were going on when the last reports came in.
