SRINAGAR: Cases of molestation of women have gone up, while rapes and “eve-teasing” have gone down in J&K, as per the 2014 crime report prepared by the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Crime Branch (CB) wing. (The report uses the term ‘eve-teasing’ and also differentiates that from cases of ‘molestation’).
Against 378 rape cases registered in 2013, the CB report revealed that 354 such cases were recorded in the state in 2014. But while the number of registered rape cases has gone down a bit, molestation cases have gone up. “Against 1,389 cases in 2013,” the report said, “1,413 molestation cases were registered in 2014.” ‘Eve-teasing’ cases have, however, declined. Against 354 cases in 2013, 307 such cases were registered in the state in 2014.
The report said that, overall, crimes against women have deceased in 2014 as compared to 2013. “Against 3,714 crimes in 2013,” it said, “the total number of crimes against women stood at 3,535 in 2014.”
Pertinently, the report revealed that most of the rape cases were registered in Jammu, with 68 women coming forth to report such crimes. Rajouri and Doda stood second and third registering 40 and 29 rape cases respectively. “17 rape cases were registered in Srinagar last year,” the report said. But Srinagar leads in molestation cases, with 218 cases registered followed by Kulgam and Anantnag with 171 and 123 cases respectively.
In cases classified as eve-teasing, Jammu again ‘topped’ the list with 52 recorded cases. Srinagar and Anantnag stood second and third, recording 44 and 29 cases respectively, the report said.
