SRINAGAR: Hundreds of casual workers on Wednesday protested demanding regularization of their services.
Raising slogans against the government, scores of casual workers hit the streets and tried to march towards Lal Chowk. Police swung into action and cane charged scores of protestors including women.
The protesters said that they have been working for the past 15 years on minimum wages in different government departments including PHE, PDD, R&B, Health, Irrigation, Engineering wing and Tourism.
They added that there are about 61000 workers who continue t0 suffer owing to government’s indifference.
“There are times when our departments do not even pay us for months. Why is government silent over this serious issue. It has to come out of the oblivion,” one of the protesting casual labors told Kashmir Reader.
“Asha Workers which come under the ambit of Health Department handle all mandatory work in the department but ironically are not paid for the last several months, said a protesting Asha Worker,” Parveena Akhter.
Shamima, a protesting Asha Worker said that they have been asking the authorities to regularize their services for the past several years, but to no avail.
