SRINAGAR: The Minister for Sheep and Animal Husbandry, Sajad Gani Lone, on Friday asked people to invest in the “lucrative” animal farming sector to boost the state’s economy.
An official handout issued here said the minister visited district sheep office, hatch poultry, sheep breeding farm, and fisheries farm in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
“He called for enhanced investment in this lucrative sector to boost the state’s economy,” the handout said. Lone stressed on introduction of cooperative model, public private partnership, and investments in the sector.
He said the need of the hour is to make Jammu and Kashmir self-sufficient in this sector as the state is meeting bulk of domestic consumption from imports.
He asked the unemployed, educated youth to show keen interest in setting up their own units in this sector like dairy, poultry, fishery “as there is immense scope for income generation and employment opportunities in this sector”.
The minister asked the officers to work in tandem with public representatives to improve the department’s performance.
He said Jammu and Kashmir is blessed with huge natural resources, which are very useful for agriculture and allied activities.
