BARAMULLA: Within a month, traders at Fruit Mandi Sopore elected two presidents owing to the difference between members of their erstwhile representative body.
The election for president of Fruit Growers Association Sopore was held on August 4. And Mushtaq Ahmad Tantray was elected as president in presence of Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, SDM Sopore, MLA Sopore, Area Marketing Officer (AMO) of Mandi, and other officers.
After joining the office, Mushtaq announced full support to all traders and growers who are part of the association.
A faction of the association’s members, however, refused to accept Mushtaq as president.
The group subsequently announced August 26 as the date for fresh elections, and declared Farooq Ahmad Bhat as president of the freshly-constituted ‘New Fruit growers Association Sopore’.
The election was again held in presence of officers and senior citizens.
The traders are now represented by the two different associations.
Ghulam Hassan, a trader, told Kashmir Readers that the difference among traders led to the election of two presidents in one month.
“Both the presidents are in office. Each of them is being treated as the elected president by one group and opposed by the other,” he said.
