Baramulla: The army claimed on Thursday that it killed three militants and captured another one alive during a gunfight in Rafiabad area of Baramulla district.
Since the area is remote and civilians are not allowed entry when a gunfight is on, it is difficult to obtain an independent version of what happens in such cases. Therefore, the army and police are the only source of information in a majority of these cases.
An army spokesman said that the militants were part of the same group which had come from Pakistan administered Kashmir by crossing the Line of Control in Uri area a few days ago.
One of the militants of the group was killed during an operation in Lachipora on Wednesday and the rest had escaped to Rafiabad and Nowgam areas.
On Wednesday itself, the spokesman said, 32 RR and 4 Para units of the army launched an operation in the upper reaches of Rafiabad. In the operation, which continued till last reports came in, three militants were killed and the fourth, whom news channels identified as Sajjad from Balochistan area of Pakistan, was caught alive.
He is the second Pakistani national, according to government forces, who has been captured alive in the past one month.
Naved alias Usman was reportedly caught by civilians during an attack on government forces in Udhampur early this month.
It was learnt that intelligence officers from various agencies assembled in Watergam camp of 32 RR to interrogate the captured militant. He would be shifted to Srinagar later.
In a statement, the army spokesman said: “The preliminary interrogation reveals that the captured terrorist is a 22-years-old LeT operative and belongs to Pakistan. The captured terrorist is now being taken for joint interrogation.”
