Army officer killed in Pakistani firing

Kupwara: A junior commissioned officer (JCO) was killed in fresh cross-border firing between Indian army and Pakistani rangers on Tuesday afternoon along the Line of Control in Kupwara district.
The deceased, Krishan Singh of 3rd Kumaon Regiment, died in Pakistani fire on Indian posts in Nowgam area of Handwara in the afternoon.
Both armies exchange mortar and heavy fire in Lachipora in Uri, Baramulla district, but there was no casualty.
More than a dozen civilians have been killed on both sides in the past fortnight in cross-border firing, most of them in Jammu region.
Both countries accuse each other of violating the ceasefire they had agreed upon in November 2003. Pakistan recently asked India to they should put in place a mechanism that will determine who violates the ceasefire.
The tension along the border is believed to be one of the factors that led to the abortion of the talks that were scheduled to take place on Sunday between the national security advisers of the nations.
