Pulwama: At least two people, including an elderly man have been injured in fresh clashes in this south Kashmir Township, as a complete shutdown is being observed against the alleged misbehaviour by a cop of the Special Operations Group (SOG) with a college girl.
All shops, business establishments, petrol pumps remained closed today across the district in response to the call given by Traders Federation, Pulwama against the alleged misbehaviour with a college girl by a policeman, witnesses told Kashmir Reader. The shutdown also affected the movement of traffic.
However, the traffic remained unaffected on the Srinagar-Jammu highway, where CRPF troopers and policemen were deployed in huge numbers.
At the Murran Chowk, groups of youth assembled this morning and staged demonstrations against the police. Besides chanting pro-freedom slogans, the protesters also pelted the government forces with rocks.
“The government forces burst teargas canisters after they failed to chase away the protesters with batons. This led to the outbreak of clashes that spread to other areas as well,” witnesses said.
Abdul Gaffar Sheikh, 60, of Tral was among the two people injured during the clashes. Sheikh, who was hit by a stone in the head, was removed to the nearby district hospital Pulwama. However, the doctors there referred him to Srinagar for specialized treatment.
On Monday, violent protests broke out after an SOG cop Babar Ahmad misbehaved with a college girl in the Main Town. The incident triggering fierce clashes leaving at least seven people including four policemen injured. Fearing situation to go out of hands, police filed a case against the accused cop.
