Lecturer shot dead by unknown gunmen in Awantipora

Pulwama: Unidentified gunmen have shot dead a lecturer in Awantipora town of the neighboring Anantnag district.

Unknown gunmen barged into the house of Javed Ahmad Khan in Khandipora village of Awantipora around 9:35 pm Tuesday and fired shots from close range at him, a senior police official told Kashmir Reader. Khan, who is said to be a lecturer in Guru Nanak College died on the spot.

In his thirties, Khan had served two years imprisonment under the draconian Public Safety Act (PSA) after police claimed to have recovered arms and ammunitions from him.

“Two years later, he survived an assassination bid when unknown gunmen fired at his house indiscriminately. Earlier in 2002, his brother Ghulam Mohammad alias Gul Khan, a militant was killed in an encounter with government forces,” the officer said.

Meanwhile, SOG of police, army and police have reached the spot to assess the situation.
