3 unknown Lashkar militants killed in Handwara: Police

Baramulla: Three unknown militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed and soldier injured in an overnight gunfight in a forest area of Handwara in the frontier Kupwara district.

Special Operations Group (SOG) and army’s 21 RR and 6 Para, cordoned off Kurhama forest in Handwara amid specific information about the presence of militants in the area on Saturday night, DIG, north Kashmir, Gareeb Das told Kashmir Reader today. He said when the joint team started combing operations; the militants hiding in the jungle opened random fire upon them.

“This led to the outbreak of gunfight. In the initial exchange of gunfire, a soldier was injured,” Das said, adding “ The operation was suspended during the night due to darkness,”

He said that the gunfight resumed this morning leading to the death of three unidentified Lashkar militants. He said arms and ammunition have been recovered from the spot.
