BARAMULLA: Hailstorm and torrential rains have caused damage to the standing crops in several parts of this north Kashmir district.
On Thursday evening, parts of the district including Tangmarg, Rafiabad, and Sangrama witnessed heavy rainfall and hailstorm. It, according to the locals, has caused damage to fruits such as apples and pears in the orchards and to standing agriculture crops in the fields.
“All growers and traders suffered hefty losses last year, and this year the persistent bad weather conditions have been damaging our horticulture and agriculture,” President of Fruit Mandi Sopore, Mushtaq Ahmad Tantray, told Kashmir Reader.
“We are under a constant threat. Untimely rains are damaging quality as well as the quantity of the crops,” he said. Mushtaq said most growers may not be able to repay on time their bank loans.
“Due to the losses (this year), they can’t pay their monthly installments. We are yet to get any compensation from the government,” he said.
The locals said the bad weather caused damaged to houses also.
“The rain and the wind damaged the crops. The roofs of the houses also got damaged,” Abdul Rashid Mir, a local, said.
