Vodafone awards scholarships to 100 students

SRINAGAR: Vodafone India, one of India’s leading telecommunications service providers, on Thursday awarded scholarships and certificates to over 100 meritorious students in Kashmir Valley.
As part of its ‘Vodafone Delights’ initiative in J&K, Vodafone had announced the 3rd edition of its scholarship programme in the state in May 2015, inviting entries from class 10 and class 12 students who met the scholarship criteria.
“On Thursday, scholarships were awarded to over 100 students from Kashmir region who achieved a perfect 10 CGPA score in the CBSE class 10 examinations or scored 90 per cent or above marks in the J&K State Education Board and CBSE class 10 and 12 examinations for the academic year 2014-15,” the company said in a release issued here.
This year, the company disbursed the scholarship money through M-Pesa, with an idea to further empower the students and their parents by giving in their hands power of the company’s “innovative, safe and secure” mobile wallet, it said. It said M-Pesa is “the largest banking correspondent” in India and is playing a “vital role” in enabling financial inclusion and m-commerce. It has made the lives easy for more than three million customers across India since it was launched, it added.
“To disburse the scholarships through M-Pesa, Vodafone activated the M-Pesa service on the mobile phones of the parents of the scholarship winning students for free at the prize-distribution ceremony,” it said.
Business Head-J&K, Punjab and HP, Vodafone India, Pushpinder Singh Gujral, said the scholarship programme initiative “is an effort by Vodafone to contribute to the growth of J&K”.
“By promoting academic excellence amongst students, we want to see these children build a better future for them. It gives us great joy to be a partner in the growth and development of these students,” he said.
The number of students who were awarded scholarships by Vodafone has now reached 750.
