Bar will ‘oppose Sainik Colony tooth and nail’

Srinagar: The largest association of Valley lawyers, the J&K High Court Bar Association, said on Tuesday that it will “oppose tooth and nail” the proposed Sainik (soldier) Colony proposed near Srinagar Airport.
“It is a nefarious design of the BJP-RSS combine to change the demography of the state and to use PDP for the said purpose. The governor (who is the head of Sainik Board, which has proposed the colony and identified land for it) is their protégé,” a statement of the Bar said.
At the meeting of its executive members, the Bar said, “There was no need to establish such colonies even for the ex-servicemen who are permanent residents of J&K because they have their own houses in which they are living along with their families.”
The Bar said that if any ex-serviceman has no land to build a house on, he should have no “difficulty in purchasing land in his native place”.
In regard to a petition filed by a RSS-backed think tank, challenging a legal provision in the Indian Constitution that allows J&K to provide special privileges to its residents, the Bar said it will consult other pro-freedom groups before formulating a response.
“Because the filing of the petition is politically motivated as its purpose is to facilitate more and more Sainik Colonies and pave way for settlement of outsiders in the state to change its Muslim-majority character,” the statement said.
