SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Sunday expressed concern over the increase in hostilities between India and Pakistan on the Line of Control (LoC) appealing both the countries to immediately adhere to ceasefire agreement.
In a statement, Mirwaiz expressed his grief and regret over killing and injuring of dozens of people in Poonch and Balakote sectors during the recent firing and shelling incidents on LoC.
Appealing India and Pakistan to observe immediate ceasefire, Mirwaiz said it was imperative to stop killing of people living along the LoC.
As many as eight persons have been killed on both sides since Friday’s exchange of mortars between Indian and Pakistani soldiers along the Line of Control. While six died on Indian side, two have been killed on Pakistani side.
Asserting that Kashmir issue can’t be solved through military means, Mirwaiz said the dispute can only be solved through meaningful dialogue and political resolve among all the stake holders for which Hurriyat was ready to play its role.
He expressed hope that the proposed meeting between the National Security Advisors of India and Pakistan next week would make constructive progress on Kashmir dispute as well as other contentious issues.
He stated that Kashmir being “the core issue” should be solved through dialogue in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of Kashmiris.
Mirwaiz also strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Lahore which claimed many lives including that of the Punjab province home minister, Shuja Khanzada. Expressing his condolences with the families of the bereaved, Mirwaiz prayed for the deceased souls.
